State Farm Faces Big Penalties Over LA Wildfire Claims
Los Angeles, California, USATue May 05 2026
California regulators say State Farm mishandled claims from the January 2025 Los Angeles wildfires. The department is seeking up to $4 million in fines if the company is found guilty of willful violations. State Farm denies any wrongdoing and says it has already paid $5. 7 billion in wildfire claims.
The wildfires killed 31 people and damaged over 16, 000 homes. The Eaton Fire in Altadena and the Palisades Fire were the main causes of the destruction. About 11, 300 claims came from State Farm customers, which is almost a third of all the 38, 835 claims filed by insurers in California.
Regulators examined 220 sample claims. They found 398 violations of state law in 114 of those claims. The investigation is now moving to a public hearing before an administrative judge.
State Farm says the state’s insurance market is the most dysfunctional in the country. The company blames regulatory delays for its problems and rejects accusations of a pattern of mishandling or underpaying claims. It will respond through the legal process.
The case highlights how insurance companies and regulators are fighting over wildfire losses in California. The outcome could affect future claims handling for homeowners across the state.
