State Schools Get a Boost as Lawmakers Shift Funds
Utah, USASat Mar 07 2026
The Utah Legislature has wrapped up its 2026-2027 budget for public schools, choosing to reallocate money in a way that mirrors moves made in higher education the previous year. In 2025, state universities were required to divert a portion of their budgets toward high‑value fields like health care and artificial intelligence, which meant cutting other programs. This year, lawmakers applied a similar approach to K‑12 schools, adding money in some areas while trimming small parts elsewhere.
A key change is the weighted pupil unit, which sets the base cost per student. It has risen by 4. 2 percent, adding roughly $191 million to the overall budget. Teachers will also see a modest increase in supplies and materials, with an extra $14 million earmarked for classroom tools. Early literacy programs receive $16 million, and at‑risk students benefit from $25 million that supports those from low‑income families or learning English.
Special education training will get a $5 million boost, while technology initiatives such as AP test preparation receive nearly $14 million. The budget also includes a small allocation for reduced‑price school lunches and a $35 million investment in applied professional education centers.
Despite the overall raise, some legislators expressed concern about cuts. A digital teaching program that once helped schools integrate technology has been trimmed by $18 million, a move justified by the fact that most students now have devices. Critics argue that this may leave districts without support for new tech needs.
There are also worries about teacher pay. State‑wide raises, which have historically been around 4 percent, are expected to drop to about 3 percent this year. While the overall salary range remains competitive compared to other states, educators fear uncertainty about future increases.
Overall, the Legislature’s decision signals a continued commitment to strengthening public education, even as it navigates budget constraints and shifting priorities.
