Hurricane Helene has left a trail of destruction, and unfortunately, so have the lies on social media. False claims about the federal response to the storm are spreading like wildfire, causing more harm than good in areas trying to recover. This isn’t just affecting people’s lives; it’s also a sign of what’s to come in the upcoming election.
Elon Musk, who owns X, has been posting rumors about the federal government's response. He’s not alone – many others are spreading misinformation, trying to make President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris look bad. But local officials and emergency responders are fighting back, saying these lies aren’t true.
Kerry Giles from Rutherford County, NC, told CNN that debunking these rumors took up resources that could have been used for recovery efforts. She and her team had to issue a statement to clear up false claims about the government taking over towns and seizing property. Snopes and local media helped reduce some of the misinformation, but it’s still a big problem.
Some lies involve FEMA’s response. Former President Donald Trump falsely claimed that relief funds are being held back from Republican areas to help migrants. But he did something similar when he was president. David French, a conservative columnist, said that even when elected officials rebut these claims, people who follow certain leaders still believe the lies.
FEMA has tried to push back with a rumor control page, but it’s hard to fight against people who want to believe false information. Misleading AI-generated images are also making things worse on Facebook. A local news station even had to teach people how to spot these fake photos.
As North Carolina columnist Billy Ball put it, “We have a lot of crises in the U. S. , but few are as significant as the information crisis. ” People are lying to make us hate each other and for their own gain. With the election coming up, things might get even uglier.
