Every year, strokes affect nearly 800, 000 people in the United States. Strokes happen when blood flow to the brain is disrupted. One in four adults over 25 will experience a stroke in their lifetime.
Dr. Matthew Boyce from HCA Hospitals explains that remembering the acronym FAST is key. First, check if the face is drooping or numb. Next, see if there's arm weakness on one side. Then, note if there's slurred speech or difficulty speaking. If you notice any of these signs, the last step is to call 911 immediately.
"Quick evaluation is crucial because early treatments can reduce stroke damage, " Boyce says. "Don't delay calling 911; waiting too long may mean missing the chance for effective treatment. "
Other stroke symptoms can include sudden numbness, confusion, vision problems, trouble walking, or a severe headache. While waiting for emergency services, avoid taking any medicine, like aspirin, because it might interfere with the doctors' plans.
High blood pressure is a major cause of stroke that can be controlled. Lifestyle changes such as regular exercise, healthy eating, good sleep, and quitting smoking or vaping can help prevent strokes. It’s also important to know your family history and talk to your doctor about reducing your risk for strokes.
