Suncoast Faces New Political Puzzle
Florida, USASat May 02 2026
The Florida Legislature has redrawn the map for Congressional District 16, merging Sarasota and Manatee with Hardee, DeSoto and parts of Pinellas. The change means many towns that were once split across different districts now share one representative.
Three well‑known Republicans—Sydney Gruters, Greg Steube and Anna Paulina Luna—are now all inside this new district. The overlap could spark a competitive race among them, turning the area into an intraparty showdown.
Sydney Gruters announced she will run for the seat. She has worked on case‑work for former congressmen in the region and claims deep ties to Southwest Florida. Her campaign focuses on easing living costs, insurance issues, housing pressures and supporting local agriculture.
Because Pinellas County is now part of the district, voters from St. Petersburg and surrounding urban areas will share a congressman with those in beach towns, suburbs and rural farms. This mix may shift discussions about where federal money should go—coastal projects, tourism or rural development.
The new lines also mean that many Suncoast suburbs and countryside communities will have a single voice in Washington instead of several. Residents must decide how they want that voice to represent their interests.
The timing of the next election could change if courts intervene, leaving voters and candidates to adapt to possibly unsettled district lines.
