Swedish Doctors Test a New Spiritual Care Tool
SwedenSat May 09 2026
A team of specialists in Sweden worked to create and test a fresh version of a well‑known spiritual assessment questionnaire. The original tool, called the HOPE tool, was first made by researchers in another country and helps doctors spot patients’ deep questions about meaning, faith, or existence.
The Swedish version started with a basic translation of the questions into Swedish. However, Sweden’s society is largely secular and very diverse, so a simple translation was not enough. The researchers needed to adjust the wording and examples so that they felt natural for Swedish patients from many different backgrounds.
To finish this adaptation, the team asked a group of palliative‑care doctors to try out the new questionnaire. They looked at whether the questions were easy to read (what the study calls “face validity”) and whether they seemed useful and covered all important areas of patients’ spiritual needs (this is called “content validity”).
The doctors reviewed each item and suggested small changes, like using everyday Swedish words instead of formal or religious terms that might feel out of place. They also pointed out a few questions that seemed repetitive or irrelevant to the typical Swedish patient group, leading the researchers to remove or rephrase them.
After a few rounds of revisions, the final Swedish version – HOPE‑SE – was ready. The feedback from the specialists showed that most of them found the tool clear and relevant, though a few still felt some parts could be simplified further. Overall, the study suggests that a culturally sensitive spiritual assessment can be built by combining careful translation with input from local clinicians.
The project highlights how tools developed in one country must be thoughtfully adapted before they can help patients elsewhere. It also shows that doctors themselves play a key role in shaping how such tools work on the ground.
