Tariff Refunds to Roll Out in May
United States, USAThu Apr 30 2026
The United States is set to begin returning money taken from importers after a Supreme Court decision declared President Trump’s tariffs illegal. The first refunds are expected to arrive around May 11, according to a court filing on Tuesday in the U. S. Court of International Trade.
The refunds come after more than two months since the Supreme Court ruled that the tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) were unlawful.
Judge Richard Eaton, who is in charge of the refund process, explained that about 21 % of the entries originally hit by tariffs have been cleared through a new system called CAPE, or Consolidated Administration and Processing of Entries.
Only around 3 % of the IEEPA entries have moved into the final refund stage, where the Treasury will actually issue payments.
As of April 26, roughly 1. 74 million entries that were accepted for removal had entered the refund phase.
The entire process could return about $166 billion to more than 330, 000 importers who dealt with around 53 million entries.
The Supreme Court’s February ruling left a gap in how those importers would be compensated, creating uncertainty that is now being resolved.
Following the 6‑3 decision declaring the tariffs illegal, President Trump criticized the ruling as “terrible” and “totally defective, ” then announced a new 10 % global tariff.
