Tata Steel, a big name in the steel world, is in trouble. A group in the Netherlands is suing two of its Dutch companies. They want €1. 4 billion (that's a lot of money! ) for health and environmental issues. The group says the steel plant in IJmuiden is making people sick and lowering home values.
The group, called Stichting Frisse Wind. nu (SFW), is fighting for the people living near the plant. They say the plant's emissions are causing health problems and making homes less valuable. Tata Steel says the claims are not true and they will fight back. They also say the group hasn't shown any proof.
This isn't the first time Tata Steel has been in trouble in the Netherlands. Last year, they were fined for breaking emission rules. The government even threatened to shut down one of their plants if they didn't follow the rules. Tata Steel said they would fight these penalties too.
Tata Steel is trying to be more eco-friendly. They have a plan to cut emissions and are getting help from the Dutch government. But the people living near the plant are not happy. A health study showed that living near the plant can lower life expectancy by 2. 5 months.
The lawsuit is a big deal. It could take years to sort out. Tata Steel says they will see how it goes and fight if they need to. The stock market didn't react much, so maybe they don't think it's a big problem yet.
