Tax Plan Shake-Up: Who Wins and Who Pays More?
Berlin, GermanyTue Jun 16 2026
Germany’s finance chief has floated two different ways to adjust income taxes, aiming to cut bills for most people while squeezing those at the very top. The smaller plan trims around €10 billion off what taxpayers owe, while the bigger one drops roughly twice that amount. To pay for it, officials might raise the extra tax on very high incomes, now set at 45% for singles making about €280, 000 or more per year.
The proposals also shift when the next highest rate kicks in. Currently, a 42% top rate starts at income around €70, 000, but the government wants to push that higher. Experts say this tweak is likely a nod to conservative allies who want to shield more middle-class earners. The pricier version adds another twist: a boost to inheritance taxes, possibly to shore up funds before a court decision expected later this year.
Meanwhile, talks behind closed doors continue, with no official details released yet. A ministry spokesperson only said discussions remain private and refused to share specifics. The bigger question hanging over the plan is whether it can balance fairness with budget needs without sparking pushback from wealthier voters.
