Scientists have found a special protein in tea plants that helps them fight off a nasty fungus called Colletotrichum camelliae. This fungus causes a disease known as tea anthracnose, which is a big problem for tea growers. The protein, called CsJAZ11, works by teaming up with another protein called CsMYC2. 2 inside the plant's nucleus.
Normally, proteins like CsJAZ11 act as brakes in a plant's defense system. They slow down the activity of other proteins that turn genes on or off. But in this case, CsJAZ11 doesn't slow things down. Instead, it helps the plant fight off the fungus. Scientists found this out by turning off and turning up the production of CsJAZ11 in tea leaves. When they turned it off, the plants got sicker. When they turned it up, the plants fought off the fungus better.
This is surprising because usually, these kinds of proteins work by stopping other proteins from doing their job. But CsJAZ11 doesn't stop CsMYC2. 2. Instead, it helps turn on a different gene called CsRPM1. This gene is like a superhero that helps the plant resist the fungus. So, CsJAZ11 is like a coach, helping CsRPM1 to do its job better.
This discovery is important because it helps us understand how tea plants defend themselves. It could lead to new ways to protect tea plants from diseases. But there's still more to learn. Scientists need to figure out exactly how CsJAZ11 helps turn on CsRPM1. And they need to see if this happens in other plants too.
