In Marblehead, school has been closed for four days straight due to a teachers' strike. The town's educators, represented by the Marblehead Education Association (MEA), are facing a fine of $50, 000 imposed by an Essex County Superior Court judge for defying the state's ban on public sector strikes. The fine increases by $10, 000 each day the strike continues. Despite this, teachers like Hannah Hood are determined to keep striking until they get a fair deal.
They believe the School Committee and Town Administrator Thatcher Kezer are deliberately stalling negotiations to make the MEA suffer the fines. The football team, however, is allowed to play their postseason game against Grafton, as the superintendent has decided to let extracurricular activities continue with non-teacher staff. This decision comes after an earlier ban that threatened to make the high school football team forfeit their playoff game.
