Tech vs. Houston on Friday? Big 12 says it’s happening
Texas Tech University, Lubbock, USAFri Apr 03 2026
The Big 12 isn’t backing down after Texas Tech booster Cody Campbell called out the league over a Friday night game this fall. Campbell tagged the commissioner in a social media post, unhappy about Tech playing Houston on a Friday instead of Saturday. But the league isn’t changing course.
Commissioner Bret Yormark made it clear in a statement: Campbell doesn’t control the conference’s schedule. The decision to add more Friday night games was made by the board and athletic directors to boost the league’s profile. The move seems to be working—Friday night games in 2025 drew 64% higher ratings than the conference average. And despite Campbell’s frustration, the league insists all schools get equal TV opportunities under the new rules.
Tech isn’t the only school playing on Fridays these days. Last season, Kansas State, Baylor, Colorado, and Arizona all had Friday night matchups. The league’s TV partners clearly see value in shifting games to weeknights, and the Big 12 is leaning into it.
For Tech, a Friday night game against Houston could mean more exposure. The team’s considered a top contender for the Big 12 title, and primetime slots help with national attention. Still, not everyone’s thrilled about the change—especially fans used to Saturday traditions.
The bigger picture? The Big 12 is prioritizing TV ratings and league visibility over tradition. Whether fans like it or not, Friday night football is here to stay in the conference.
