Tech‑Based Brain Boosts Before Surgery: A Quick Look

Sun Jun 07 2026
Researchers are checking whether using computers or phones to train the mind just before an operation can stop people from getting delirious after surgery. Delirium is a common problem, especially in older patients, and can make recovery harder or even cost more. The study sifted through many medical databases for trials that tested digital brain exercises around the time of surgery, focusing on people over 60 and using English or French papers. Six studies fit the bill out of more than six hundred hits.
The experiments differed in what kind of surgery they covered, which parts of thinking they targeted, and how long the training lasted. Most studies were strict about who could join, which may have limited how many people benefited. Results were mixed: a couple of studies showed some promise, but others found no clear advantage. The field is still new and more work is needed to see if these tools can be used easily, how best to dose them, and whether broader groups of patients would benefit.
