Teen Internet Use and Risk of Online Abuse in Tanzania
Tanzania, East Africa,Sun Mar 29 2026
In Tanzania, a large part of the population is young.
Many teens now spend more time online than ever before.
Researchers wanted to see how everyday habits affect the chance of being abused through images online.
They used a survey that asked 1, 014 teens between 12 and 20 years old about their daily routines.
The group was split by gender, age, and where they lived.
The questions covered how often the teens used the Internet on weekdays versus weekends, and who was around them while they were online.
The study found that teens who used the Internet more on weekends were at higher risk of seeing or sharing sexual images without consent.
When a teen’s family was small, the danger on weekdays went up because there were fewer adults watching.
However, a smaller family seemed to protect teens on weekends.
The researchers also looked at other factors.
If a teen was in close contact with someone who could be a bad influence, or if they looked attractive to such people, the risk went up.
Having someone nearby who could keep an eye on them lowered the danger during the week.
The results suggest that preventing online abuse needs to focus on when teens are online.
Schools and parents should work together to create rules that fit the way teens use the Internet each day.
By matching protection strategies to daily habits, it may be possible to reduce the chance of abuse.
