In a shocking turn of events, the teenager accused of murdering three young girls at a dance class in Southport, England, is now facing terrorism charges. Axel Rudakubana, who turned 18 after the July attack, will be charged with producing the deadly toxin ricin and possessing information useful for terrorism. This comes in addition to his existing charges of murder, attempted murder, and knife possession. The new charges were announced after police found an unknown substance in Rudakubana's home, which tests confirmed was ricin.
The attack, which happened during a Taylor Swift-themed dance class, left three girls dead and eight others injured. Despite the discovery of ricin, authorities assure the public that the risk was low. The police chief, Serena Kennedy, clarified that the attack has not been declared a terrorist incident, as motive is not required to be established for these charges.
Following the tragic event, protests and riots broke out across the country, fueled by misinformation and far-right agitation. This marked one of the worst disorders seen in the UK in over a decade.
