Teens Rescued from Mount Washington’s Extreme Weather Gamble
Mount Washington, New Hampshire, Plymouth, Massachusetts, USAWed Apr 22 2026
Two teens from Massachusetts learned the hard way why Mount Washington is infamous among hikers. Instead of turning back when conditions turned nasty, they pushed toward the summit and found themselves in serious trouble. At 7:30 PM, rangers got the call about two hikers struggling near the top. One teen was complaining of sharp leg pain, likely from the cold or overexertion. With winds already howling and snow on the way, every minute counted.
The rescue wasn’t simple. A state park worker had to go out first to locate the pair. Meanwhile, crews from the Auto Road worked fast to clear a path so vehicles could reach the summit safely. Four-wheel-drive trucks loaded with rescuers then headed up. By 8 PM, the teens were found shivering near a building. First aid was given on the spot before they were carefully guided down the mountain. By 10 PM, all were safely off the peak.
This incident shows how quickly things can go wrong on Mount Washington. Even in summer, weather there can shift from mild to deadly in minutes. Hikers often underestimate the risks, thinking their experience or gear will keep them safe. But once conditions turn, even the simplest tasks become dangerous.
