A big chill is heading to Tennessee, thanks to a polar vortex. This weather event is pushing cold air from the Arctic into the Eastern United States. Over the weekend, temperatures in Tennessee are expected to drop significantly, reaching the low 20s and upper teens.
In the Appalachian region of Eastern Tennessee, there's a possibility of ice or a mix of wintry weather. This is the second of three expected cold snaps that will affect the Eastern part of the country this winter.
A polar vortex is a large area of low pressure and cold air that usually stays around the Earth's poles. Sometimes, during winter, this vortex expands and sends cold air southward along the jet stream. This is what's happening now, bringing the cold air to Tennessee.
The cold air is expected to arrive in Tennessee this coming weekend. Lead Long-Range Meteorologist Paul Pastelok from AccuWeather believes that two to three more rounds of intense cold are possible from the Midwest to much of the East, spanning from December 10 to 19. There is even a chance for a frost or freeze as far south as central Florida.
Tennessee will see frigid temperatures overnight this coming weekend. Nashville is expected to have the coldest temperatures, with the polar vortex having its greatest impact on the weather. Other cities like Chattanooga, Knoxville, and Memphis will also experience a significant drop in temperatures.
For example, in Chattanooga, temperatures will drop from a high of 47 on Monday to a low of 24 on Saturday. In Knoxville, the high will drop from 44 on Monday to 37 on Saturday, with lows reaching 20. Memphis and Nashville will also see a similar trend, with temperatures dropping significantly by the weekend.
This cold snap is a reminder of the power of weather systems like the polar vortex. It's important to stay informed and prepared for such weather events, especially during the winter holidays. So, bundle up and stay warm, Tennessee!
