Tension Rises Over the Strait as U. S. and Iran Clash
Strait of HormuzTue May 05 2026
The tense situation in the Middle East escalated when the United States and Iran began new hostilities over control of the Strait of Hormuz.
The U. S. Navy said it destroyed six small Iranian boats, cruise missiles and drones after President Trump ordered a naval escort for stranded tankers in what he called “Project Freedom. ”
Iran’s parliament speaker warned that the four‑week ceasefire had been violated by U. S. forces, claiming shipping and energy routes were now unsafe.
The Strait of Hormuz is a key passage for oil, fertilizer and other goods; its near‑closure since February 28 has pushed global prices higher.
Merchant ships in the Gulf reported explosions and fires, while an oil port in the UAE—home to a large U. S. military base—was struck by Iranian missiles, setting fire to the site.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guard has effectively shut down the waterway with threats of mines, drones and missiles. In response, the U. S. imposed a blockade on Iranian ports.
Iranian officials said no U. S. vessels had crossed the strait, yet a U. S. -flagged ship claimed it passed with naval support.
Both sides offered conflicting reports: Iran accused the U. S. of targeting civilian boats and claimed it fired warning shots at a U. S. warship, while the U. S. maintained that its actions were defensive and allowed two merchant ships to pass safely.
South Korean and British maritime agencies reported incidents involving their vessels, though causes remain unclear.
Iran released a map claiming expanded control over sea areas beyond the strait, including parts of UAE coastline.
The UAE cited Iranian attacks as a serious escalation and warned it could respond, especially after a drone strike caused fire at the Fujairah oil port.
Oil prices dipped slightly as signs emerged that U. S. naval activity may be loosening Iranian control of the strait.
The conflict has claimed thousands of lives and strained the global economy. While U. S. and Iranian officials have held a single round of talks, further meetings stalled.
Trump’s administration claims U. S. -Israeli strikes target Iran’s nuclear and missile programs, support for militant groups, and other “menacing activities. ”
Iran has proposed delaying nuclear discussions until after a peace agreement on shipping is reached, a proposal the U. S. may reject.
