The Arrest of a Notorious Drug Gang Boss

Mexico City,Thu Mar 19 2026
A key member of one of Ecuador’s largest drug trafficking groups has been taken into custody in Mexico City, marking a major step for law‑enforcement agencies across the region. The suspect, known by the nickname “Little Wolf, ” was previously wanted for his role in the 2023 murder of a presidential hopeful who had campaigned vigorously against corruption. Interpol issued a red notice for him, citing links to drug smuggling, extortion and violent crime. Mexico’s security minister praised the joint effort with Colombia and Ecuador, saying it shows how well these three countries can work together against transnational crime. The victim of the 2023 shooting was a well‑known national assembly member and former journalist, killed as he left a rally in the capital.
A year later, five associates of the gang were convicted for the murder, including a cell leader who claimed he had ordered the hit from prison. The arrested individual is one of several lieutenants under a higher‑ranking boss who famously staged his own death to escape prison before being captured in Spain. He had previously served a twenty‑year sentence for killing the brother of a former interior minister and was believed to have ordered the presidential candidate’s murder before slipping away after parole. At the time of his capture, he was using an alias that had led Ecuadorian and Colombian police to track him for two months. The arrest comes as Ecuador moves closer to the United States under its current president, who has intensified military action against crime. Last year, U. S. authorities designated the gang as a foreign terrorist organization for its violent activities in Ecuador.
