The Case of Luigi Mangione: A Double‑Trial Dilemma

Manhattan, New York, New York, USAWed Apr 01 2026
Luigi Mangione, 27, is slated to appear in federal court on Wednesday. He wants to push back a trial that could send him to prison for life after he shot UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Manhattan on December 4, 2023. The judge has set the date for jury selection to start on September 8 and opening statements on October 13. His lawyers argue that Mangione also faces a state murder trial beginning June 8, and the two schedules clash. They wrote to Judge Margaret Garnett on March 18 that preparing for both cases at once would be impossible. Mangione has pleaded not guilty to every charge. Prosecutors disagree with delaying the federal case. In a filing on March 21, they said they would not stop jury selection or opening statements but could adjust the timeline for sending out about 800 juror questionnaires. Those forms are due on June 29, giving Mangione a chance to review them before trial starts.
Mangione was arrested in Pennsylvania five days after the shooting, when he was caught outside a Hilton hotel in Midtown Manhattan. He has been held since then. In January, the federal murder charge was dropped by Judge Garnett because it conflicted with the stalking charges he still faces. The federal law that would have allowed a death sentence is no longer applicable. If convicted of the stalking charges, he could still receive life in prison. In state court, a conviction would bring 25 years to life. Public reaction has been mixed. While many officials denounced Thompson’s death, some people view Mangione as a symbol of frustration over high health‑insurance costs and corporate practices.
