Ever wondered how your teammates can influence your eating habits and how you feel about your body? Research has shown that athletes are more likely to develop disordered eating habits. However, not much is known about how team interactions and relationships play a part in this. A recent study looked into this gap by examining how the pressures from teammates about appearance can affect an athlete's eating behaviors and body image concerns. The study involved 156 university athletes, with an average age of 20. 7 years, who were part of varsity or club teams across various sports. Participants filled out surveys that measured different factors like teammate pressures, the closeness of teammate relationships, internalization of athletic body ideals, how much athletes compare themselves to teammates, and concerns about weight and shape, along with disordered eating behaviors focused on muscularity.
By using path analysis, researchers found that the model fit the data well after some modifications. The results highlighted the importance of social frameworks in understanding the link between teammate pressures and body image issues and unhealthy eating habits. It also showed that team environments can significantly shape how athletes view their bodies and their relationship with food. This information can be used to develop prevention programs specifically for teams to help athletes maintain a healthy body image and eating habits.
