The Jail Call That Became a Drama
Cleveland, Ohio, USA,Thu May 28 2026
Mackenzie Shirilla, now 20, is behind bars after a fatal crash that killed her ex‑boyfriend and a friend. While at the Cuyahoga County Jail in Cleveland, she used her phone call with her mother to complain about missing an iPad and the food she was given. She begged her mom to ask the jail staff, but they told her it would be treated as a “special request. ” Her mother tried to calm her down, but Mackenzie shouted back angrily.
During another conversation, she expressed frustration over the prison meals and said she was paying for extra food with her own money. A former girlfriend of hers revealed that Mackenzie used the calls to learn about how people were talking about her in the news. She was surprised when she heard that her story had not made it to a TV show, only online coverage.
In July 2022, Mackenzie drove her Toyota Camry at high speed and crashed into a brick wall in Strongsville, Ohio. Both people inside died instantly. The incident was captured on camera and later featured in a Netflix documentary called “The Crash. ”
She is now serving two sentences of 15 years to life at the Ohio Reformatory for Women in Marysville.
In a later call, Mackenzie talked about using her notoriety to start a Hollywood career if she were released early. She also asked her mother to change her Instagram bio to “#freekenzie” and to get into a certain account. Her mother tried to stop her, but Mackenzie demanded the changes be made.
Her story shows how a young person can turn a serious mistake into a media obsession, and it raises questions about how the justice system handles high‑profile inmates.
