You’re designing a new prosthetic knee. Traditionally, you’d test it using human volunteers. But what if there was a cheaper, more efficient way? Enter the gait simulator! This study explored how to create one that’s both effective and affordable. They started by running simulations of a prosthetic leg with a specific knee design, the IITM polycentric knee (IPK). They found that to accurately test the knee, the simulator only needs to mimic three types of thigh movements: flexion-extension, and vertical and horizontal translations.
From this, they created a compact, modular simulator. When used to test the IPK, it showed that while the knee extended fully before heel contact, it needed tweaks to handle impact energy better. This highlights how a practical, cost-effective simulator can greatly aid in developing better prostheses, all while reducing the need to rely on human testers.
