A Florida federal judge, Aileen Cannon, has decided to continue overseeing a case involving a man accused of trying to assassinate former President Donald Trump. The judge, who was appointed by Trump, rejected the defendant's request for her to step down from the case. The defendant, Ryan Routh, argued that there might be an appearance of partiality because of Cannon's past connections and potential future benefits.
Routh's lawyers pointed out that Cannon was once on a list of possible nominees for U. S. Attorney General if Trump wins the upcoming election. They also mentioned that Cannon had made rulings favorable to Trump in the past, such as dismissing a classified documents case against him. Additionally, it was noted that Cannon went to high school with one of the prosecutors in Routh's case and attended his wedding.
In her ruling, Judge Cannon dismissed these arguments, stating that she has no relationship with Trump beyond official duties. She also emphasized that cases are assigned randomly and that she is not influenced by political consequences or media opinions. Cannon believed that none of the factors cited by Routh's lawyers warranted her recusal from the case.
