The Rise of Violent Settler Attacks in the West Bank

West BankThu Apr 02 2026
In recent months, violence by some Israeli settlers against Palestinians has grown louder and more dangerous. This trend started to notice people after the war with Iran began, but it has been building for years. Experts say that attacks have become bigger and scarier. One researcher at a security institute pointed out that not only are more attacks happening, but they also get harder. He warned that the people who do it feel safe because the police and army rarely punish them. When a new defence minister took office, he stopped a practice that let Israeli suspects stay in jail for long without trial. That rule had been used for Palestinians, not Israelis. Since March, at least six Palestinians have died because of these attacks. The United Nations records five deaths in the whole year so far. Israel has controlled the West Bank since 1967. Now more than half a million Israelis live in settlements that many world bodies say are illegal. The current government, led by a far‑right coalition, has built many more homes there than before.
After the big attack by Hamas in October 2023, the violence from settlers rose sharply. A group called “hilltop youth” lives on the outskirts of villages. They say they are protecting Israel and fight back whenever something bad happens to them. Their actions include burning houses, cutting trees, killing animals and shooting people. Some videos on social media show young men in masks with sticks or guns attacking villages. These attacks happen almost every day, and some politicians seem to support them. The army has been told by the prime minister to stop the worst offenders, but many soldiers do not arrest them. In fact, sometimes they help the attacks instead of stopping them. The problem is that most cases never go to court. Nine out of ten incidents end with no charges, leaving victims without justice. The situation is a sign that the fight over land and control in the West Bank has become more violent. People around the world are calling for stronger action to stop these attacks and bring fairness.
