Do you know what drives people to constantly check their social media? Scientists are digging into this question. They wanted to find out what makes someone glued to their phone's apps, a condition known as social media addiction (SMA). They looked at several factors like having dark personality traits, how well someone can control their actions, feeling anxious in social situations, and the fear of missing out (FoMO).
Researchers collected data from 369 people using questionnaires. They used a technique called regression analysis and another called Necessary Condition Analysis (NCA) to crunch the numbers. Guess what they found? People who are manipulative (Machiavellianism), self-centered (narcissism), and always worried about missing out (FoMO) are more likely to be addicted to social media. But, only being manipulative and having FoMO were found to be must-have conditions for developing this addiction.
This study helps us understand the roots of social media addiction better. It also gives clues on how to design programs to tackle this issue.
