Jack Smith, a former special counsel, recently spoke to Congress about his investigations into former President Donald Trump. He warned that the rule of law is not something to be taken lightly. It needs constant effort and dedication from everyone. Smith said that people often forget how important it is to uphold the law.
Smith's investigation found strong evidence that Trump tried to overturn the 2020 election results. This led to the January 6th riot at the U. S. Capitol. Trump has denied any wrongdoing, calling the investigations politically motivated. He even wants Smith to be prosecuted.
The House Judiciary Committee, led by Rep. Jim Jordan, a Trump ally, is looking into Smith's investigations. Jordan claims the investigations are politically driven. But Rep. Jamie Raskin, a Democrat, praised Smith for doing his job properly.
Smith has been questioned behind closed doors by Congress. Trump's supporters are pushing hard on two main investigations: one about classified documents and another about Trump's efforts to overturn the 2020 election. A judge recently dismissed the classified documents case, saying Smith's appointment was illegal. Smith dropped the election case after Trump was re-elected in 2024.
Republicans are also focusing on whether Smith tried to limit Trump's free speech. During a closed-door session, Smith said Trump could spread false information about the election but not use it to break the law. Smith's report found that Trump inspired violence on January 6th and tried to overturn the election results illegally.
Karen Friedman Agnifilo, who worked with Smith, said he was ready for the tough questioning. She praised his ability to stay calm under pressure. Smith reminded everyone that 140 law enforcement officers were hurt during the January 6th riot. He said Trump tried to stop the lawful transfer of power after losing the election.
