Suicide is a silent epidemic that has been ravaging Ohio for years, claiming the lives of five people every day. As September spotlights suicide prevention awareness nationally and around the world, it's essential to acknowledge the complexity of this issue.
What if we told you that suicide prevention efforts require a multi-faceted approach, considering mental health, financial wellness, substance abuse, and housing? Experts say people experiencing suicidal thoughts and survivors need a sense of purpose, community, and helpful resources.
But what if these resources are scarce or inaccessible? According to the Health Policy Institute of Ohio, the number of suicide deaths in the state increased by over 30% between 1999 and 2018.
But what's even more alarming is that the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent stigma have likely underreported figures in the last few years.
In Ohio, suicide is a leading cause of death for early adolescents (ages 10-14), with 50% of all lifetime mental illnesses beginning by age 14 and 75% by age 24.
But it's not just young people – farmers are 3. 5 times more likely to die by suicide than the general population, and veterans are the 13th leading cause of death overall, with suicide being the second leading cause of death for those under 45.
Fortunately, there are resources available.
The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline made nearly 340,000 contacts in the last two years, connecting individuals to life-saving resources.
Community involvement is key to suicide prevention efforts.
Starting Sept. 29, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) will host walks across the country and Ohio.
Don't wait to seek support if you or someone you know is considering suicide.
Call or text the 988 lifeline, or chat online with trained support professionals.
Remember, suicide prevention is a collective responsibility.
By acknowledging the complexity of this issue and working together, we can create a more supportive and inclusive environment for those affected.
