In Nepal, the fight against tobacco is ongoing, but progress is slow. Despite the government's efforts, including the World Health Organization's guidelines, tobacco use and its related health issues remain a significant problem. A recent study focused on the awareness and perception of graphic health warnings (GHWs) among stakeholders in Galyang Municipality, Syangja district. The study involved interviews with 11 key stakeholders, including mayors, ward chairpersons, health officials, and community leaders. These participants generally agreed that GHWs are effective in raising awareness about the dangers of tobacco. However, they noted that these warnings do not significantly change smoking behavior, especially among those who are heavily dependent on tobacco.
Participants pointed out that GHWs are more impactful than text-only warnings. But they also emphasized the need for stricter policy enforcement. This includes limiting tobacco sales and banning smoking in public areas. They suggested using clear, high-contrast images on cigarette packs, launching comprehensive public awareness campaigns, and involving political leaders and stakeholders in tobacco control efforts. The study revealed that while GHWs do raise awareness, they do not necessarily lead to behavior change, especially among dependent smokers. Key challenges include weak enforcement of tobacco control policies, regulatory gaps, and limited government engagement. To make tobacco control more effective, a multi-sectoral approach is needed. This involves community leaders, political commitment, school-based interventions, stronger local governance, licensed tobacco shops, and enhanced GHWs. Effective policy execution and community involvement are crucial for the success of tobacco control initiatives. The study highlights the need for a comprehensive strategy to tackle tobacco use in Nepal.
