Tracking Ebola’s spread in Congo’s troubled regions

Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo, theWed Jun 10 2026
The Democratic Republic of Congo now reports close to 600 confirmed Ebola cases, most caused by the Bundibugyo strain. Health teams first noticed the outbreak on May 15, but delays in detection meant the virus spread quietly for weeks before anyone realized what was happening. The situation is especially tough because this outbreak is happening in three provinces—Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu—that have faced years of fighting and instability. Officials confirm 598 cases with 115 deaths so far. While 22 people have recovered, the disease hasn’t jumped into new zones recently. Cases have popped up in 25 different health areas across the three provinces, showing how widespread the danger is. Authorities are urging anyone with fever, vomiting, diarrhea, or extreme fatigue to visit a health center right away. They’re also begging people to cooperate with medical workers instead of attacking them.
Trust is a huge problem here. Some communities refuse to follow safety rules, and violence against health teams and treatment sites has made the crisis harder to control. At the same time, doctors and aid workers say they don’t even have enough protective gear to stay safe while doing their jobs. Without better supplies and stronger community support, stopping this outbreak will be nearly impossible. The International Rescue Committee warns that unless more money is sent to Ituri province soon, the outbreak could explode beyond control. With conflict still raging in the background, health workers face an uphill battle every day just to do their work.
