In a sudden and devastating turn of events, a small plane crashed while taking off from Catalina Airport on Tuesday evening. The tragic incident took place just moments after the aircraft departed from the airport near the island city of Avalon. The plane, a twin-engine Beechcraft 95, was carrying five people on board. All five, including the pilot and four passengers, were found dead at the scene by rescue teams.
The crash happened around 8 p. m. in a rugged and steep terrain about a mile west of the airport. The circumstances surrounding the crash remain unknown, and authorities are investigating the cause. Both the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have been called in to conduct a thorough investigation.
Emergency services rushed to the site after receiving a 911 call from a cell phone, which provided GPS coordinates of the crash location. Catalina Airport, also known as the Airport in the Sky, is situated at an elevation of 1,602 feet and has a single runway stretching 3,000 feet.
Santa Catalina Island, about 25 miles off the coast of Los Angeles, is home to approximately 4,000 residents. The island is a popular tourist destination for activities like snorkeling, boating, and hiking. The picturesque city of Avalon, with its oceanfront charm, attracts many visitors from the mainland.
The sudden loss of lives in this crash has cast a shadow over the island's usually peaceful atmosphere.
