Trail Work in Alaska’s Biggest Park Is a Year‑Long Job

Alaska, Anchorage, USASat Jun 20 2026
Alaska is known for its harsh winters and endless road projects, but keeping the trails in Chugach State Park running smooth is a full‑time effort. Volunteers with the Chugach Park Fund discover that trail planning, material sourcing, crew hiring and fundraising happen all year round, not just in summer. Since 2016 the Fund has raised roughly $850, 000 from private donors to pay for trail upkeep, signage and other improvements because state budgets have favored different priorities. This summer the Fund will invest about $180, 000 into two main trails and six volunteer projects. Alaska Trails crews will work on the Lost Cabin Trail and Wolverine Bowl Ski Trail, adding boardwalks over wet spots, a small bridge and better drainage. Volunteers will also clear alder trees that choke other paths.
Support comes from local businesses, foundations and a few big names such as ConocoPhillips Alaska, Athletic Brewing, Matson, the Carr Foundation, Erin K. Johnson Memorial Fund and Alyeska Pipeline Service Company. Chugach covers 495, 000 acres with about 280 miles of trails. The park’s 11 staff members handle enforcement, visitor services and basic maintenance; only two focus on trails. The Fund’s work is essential to keep the park accessible for everyone.
