In Poland, transgender individuals often struggle to find healthcare providers they can trust. This lack of trust makes it hard for them to start their gender transition. A recent study looked at 100 transgender individuals who went to a private plastic surgery clinic for chest reconstruction. These individuals were all female-to-male transgender people who had already started hormone therapy with testosterone. The study found that the age at which people decide to undergo gender-affirming surgery is getting younger. This could mean that more people are feeling comfortable making this decision earlier in life. Interestingly, the study did not find any link between cultural or social background, religion, and gender dysphoria. This suggests that these factors do not necessarily influence a person's experience with gender dysphoria.
One positive finding was that more than half of the patients no longer needed psychiatric support. Those who were still under specialist supervision reported a significant improvement in their overall well-being. This shows that gender-affirming surgery can have a positive impact on mental health. The study highlights the need for more research and understanding of transgender healthcare. It is important for all specialists involved in the transition process to provide patient-centered care. Gender-affirming mastectomy, when combined with testosterone therapy, can greatly improve the mental health of transgender individuals.
