A recent survey revealed that many Americans agree with former President Donald Trump’s call to remove undocumented immigrants, yet they sharply reject the aggressive tactics used by enforcement agencies. The poll found that 61 % of respondents endorse deportation, a figure that climbs to 92 % among Republicans but drops to only 35 % for Democrats. This split mirrors the broader partisan divide on immigration policy.
Despite backing the idea of deportation, a sizable portion of voters disapprove of how authorities have acted. About 60 % of the public believes that immigration agents have overstepped their bounds, a view shared by nine in ten Democrats and one‑fifth of Republicans. Those who do not identify with a party are even more critical, with 65 % expressing concern. These independent voters could play a decisive role in upcoming midterm elections, where party control of Congress is at stake.
The backlash against enforcement methods is strongest among Black and Hispanic communities, groups that Trump courted in his 2024 campaign. Seventy‑four % of Black respondents and 72 % of Hispanic respondents opposed the administration’s deportation strategy, compared with just over half of white respondents. In recent months, Trump’s approval among Hispanic voters has slipped to 29 %, while his standing with Black voters sits at a low of 14 %. White approval remains comparatively higher, though it has fallen to 49 %.
The survey also highlighted growing divisions within both parties about the role of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). While 63 % of Democrats favor abolishing ICE, only 30 % oppose the idea. Republicans who support deportation are not unanimous either; nearly a quarter feel uneasy about current enforcement practices. These internal rifts suggest that the debate over immigration enforcement will continue to be a contentious issue for years ahead.
