Trump’s Iran Plan Compared to Venezuela: A Questionable Blueprint
USATue Mar 03 2026
President Trump recently told a Fox News host that his strategy against Iran is modeled after U. S. actions in Venezuela, even though the Venezuelan leader remains alive. He claimed that the approach used there—capturing the head of state and sending him to the U. S. —could be replicated in Tehran.
During a phone conversation with Bret Baier, Trump emphasized that the plan was “ready” and that the U. S. had a clear idea of what would happen next in Iran, mirroring the Venezuela example.
The president also said that recent airstrikes had eliminated not only Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, but also most of his potential successors. He told ABC that the attack was so effective it “knocked out” alternative candidates, leaving no viable replacements.
According to Trump, 48 Iranian officials were killed during the strikes. The U. S. and Israeli forces launched a coordinated air campaign over the weekend, sparking retaliatory attacks in other Middle Eastern countries and creating a power vacuum in Iran.
Despite campaigning on ending “forever wars, ” Trump now promises continuous, precise bombings until the U. S. achieves what he calls “our objective of peace. ” He suggested the conflict might last about four weeks, a claim that has drawn criticism from lawmakers and experts who fear an endless war.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth defended the operation as a decisive mission, not an endless war. Yet Trump’s administration has yet to explain what victory would look like or how hostilities would end.
Bret Baier warned that Iran’s situation is far more complex than Venezuela’s, with many unknown variables. Even so, Trump believes the current success in Iran matches or surpasses expectations set before the operation began.
Critics argue that without a clear strategy, the U. S. risks falling into a drawn‑out conflict Trump once vowed to avoid. Representative Jim Himes questioned the purpose of prolonged bombings, suggesting that endless attacks could serve no clear goal.
