Iraq says it has reached an agreement with Ankara to bring back Turkish nationals among the thousands of former ISIS prisoners that were moved from Syria.
The transfer happened after Kurdish forces withdrew and shut down camps that had held suspected terrorists for years.
Iraq’s foreign minister confirmed talks with the U. S. and other governments about returning their citizens, highlighting the case of Turkey as a concrete example.
He also urged other states to recover their nationals who were linked to terrorism so they could face justice at home.
The move follows a collapse of Kurdish security control during a Syrian offensive, leaving many detainees unaccounted for.
During its peak from 2014 to 2017, ISIS controlled large parts of Iraq and Syria, drawing fighters worldwide before being defeated by regional forces and a U. S. -led coalition.
The repatriation effort aims to ensure proper legal proceedings and prevent further complications for the detainees’ home countries.
