U. S. Carrier Ford Stops in Croatia for Repairs

The Gerald R. Ford, a large U. S. aircraft carrier, docked in Split, Croatia on March 28 to undergo maintenance. \n\nThe ship had been active for nine months, supporting U. S. operations in the Middle East and earlier missions off Venezuela. \n\nA fire broke out on March 12 in its laundry area while the vessel was in the Red Sea. Three sailors were hurt, and many others had to be treated for smoke inhalation. \n\nThe blaze lasted several hours and damaged about 100 sleeping spaces. Plumbing issues have also troubled the carrier, affecting its many toilets.\n\nBefore heading to Croatia, the Ford paused briefly at Souda Bay on Crete. The Croatian government, a NATO partner, cleared the ship’s arrival. \n\nDuring its stay, U. S. officials planned meetings with local leaders to strengthen ties between the two countries. \n\nThe carrier carries over 5, 000 crew members and more than 75 aircraft, including F‑18 fighters.
