UBS Wealth Outflows: A Wake‑Up Call for the U. S. Market
United States, USAFri Mar 20 2026
UBS reported a sharp drop in new assets across the Americas, losing $14. 1 billion in Q4 and a total of $6 billion for the year. The losses hit its U. S. wealth division hard, where the bank has been trying to turn around a business that still trails competitors in profit margins.
Swiss regulators are tightening capital rules after UBS’s 2023 rescue of Credit Suisse, adding pressure on the bank to shore up its balance sheet. Analysts say the outflows will make it tougher for UBS to boost earnings in America, the world’s biggest economy.
The bank has not commented directly on the numbers, but its chief executive, Sergio Ermotti, has repeatedly said that the U. S. turnaround plan is working. He highlighted a recent rise in pre‑tax margins from 9. 3 % to 13 %, still below rivals but a step in the right direction.
One key strategy is to use UBS’s new national banking charter, approved last year, to offer more loan products and other banking services. Ermotti believes this will help the bank compete with firms that already dominate U. S. wealth management.
Meanwhile, competitors are swooping on UBS talent. RBC hired 90 experienced advisers in 2025, many of whom brought multi‑million dollar revenue streams. Wells Fargo and Bank of America also added former UBS teams, each adding significant assets under management.
Some advisers have left to start independent practices, citing lower pay and fewer resources as driving factors. One former UBS adviser said his fee share jumped from 50 % to 70 % after going solo, a move that could reshape the advisory landscape.
UBS shares have slipped nearly 21 % this year as investors await clearer guidance on capital requirements. Analysts warn that the U. S. wealth business remains a critical concern, with no quick fix in sight. The bank’s goal of $125 billion in inflows this year is modest compared to last year's $101 billion, underscoring the challenge ahead.
