Ukraine's NATO Dream: A Possible Reality?

There's a buzz that the U. S. might soon support Ukraine joining NATO. This is big news, especially since Ukraine's been eager to join for a long time. Recently, a French newspaper, Le Monde, reported that U. S. officials are no longer against Ukraine's NATO membership. They might even speed things up if Kamala Harris becomes president. The U. S. elections are just around the corner, and Ukraine's been asking for NATO membership. They want more support for their fight against Russia. NATO has said Ukraine will join someday, but when? NATO wants to avoid getting involved in the conflict and isn't sure how Russia will react. A U. S. congressman, Gerry Connolly, said the U. S. wants to end the war and restore Ukraine's territory before talking about NATO. He thinks President Biden is open to Ukraine joining NATO, but he can't decide alone; he needs to talk with other NATO countries first. Ukraine's President, Volodymyr Zelensky, really wants NATO membership. He said if Ukraine isn't part of NATO, it's like being left out in the cold. He's been talking to NATO leaders, saying Ukraine deserves to be the 33rd member. Zelensky visited Belgium and said Ukraine had a tough choice: nuclear weapons or NATO. He made it clear they won't make nuclear weapons, but he wants NATO membership for security. Years ago, Ukraine had nuclear weapons after the Soviet Union fell apart. In 1994, Ukraine gave them up and got security promises from the U. S. , Russia, and the U. K. But now, Ukraine's former military chief, Valery Zaluzhnyi, says NATO is the best way to secure Ukraine. Zelensky told a newspaper he isn't sure what will happen after the U. S. election. He hopes for good news.
