Ukraine has seen a massive decrease in its population, with estimates showing a drop of about 10 million since 2014, and 8 million since the full-scale Russian invasion began in 2022. The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) highlights that while there hasn't been a recent census, the data shows a stark decline in the country's population. Before the war, Ukraine's population was around 45 million, but it has now fallen to approximately 35 million.
Various factors have contributed to this dramatic drop in population. Before the war, Ukraine already had one of the lowest birth rates in Europe, with many young people leaving the country to seek better opportunities elsewhere. Since the full-scale invasion in 2022, over 6. 7 million people have left Ukraine as refugees, and the birth rate has further plummeted to an average of one child per woman. This is significantly lower than the replacement rate of 2. 1 children per woman needed to maintain the population.
Additionally, the war has resulted in substantial casualties, with estimates suggesting tens of thousands of people have lost their lives. The exact number of casualties remains uncertain, as neither Ukraine nor Russia has released official figures since the start of the full-scale invasion. Despite this, the United States estimated that at least 70, 000 Ukrainian service members had been killed by August 2023. The ongoing conflict has made it challenging to stabilize the population, with Russia making gradual gains along the vast front line stretching across eastern Ukraine.
