Zelensky delivered a sharp message at the Munich Security Conference, calling Russia’s president a “slave to war” and warning that the conflict will not end by giving up territory. He compared current negotiations to the 1938 Munich Agreement, where European powers gave in to Hitler before World War II. Zelensky highlighted the damage Russia has done to Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, saying every power plant has been hit. Despite this, he praised the workers who keep the grid running and urged Western allies to supply more air‑defence systems quickly. He met with U. S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, stressing that Ukraine will not surrender its eastern regions and that any deal must include solid security guarantees. He argued that leaving loopholes would let Russia start another war.
Zelensky said the U. S. often talks about concessions but focuses only on Ukraine, while Russia demands recognition of its occupied areas. He warned that dividing Ukraine would be a mistake similar to giving up Czechoslovakia in 1938. The next round of talks will take place in Geneva after U. S. –Russia–Ukraine meetings in Abu Dhabi. Zelensky hopes the talks will be productive and calls for faster political decisions, noting that weapons evolve quicker than policy. He added that elections in Ukraine will happen once a ceasefire and security guarantees are secured.
