Ukraine's tech scene has undergone a major shift since the war began. The focus is now on creating advanced military tech. This isn't just about keeping the country safe. It's also a big business opportunity. The tough conditions of the battlefield help test these new technologies. This makes them attractive to other countries. Many nations want to use these innovations to boost their own defence capabilities.
The war has sparked a tech boom in Ukraine. Hundreds of new startups have popped up. They're getting attention from both local and international investors. Over 30 countries have shown interest in Ukraine's defence innovations. This shows that these technologies have a lot of potential for export.
Drones have seen a huge surge in production. In 2022, only 5, 000 drones were made. By the end of 2024, that number skyrocketed to 4 million. That's an 800-fold increase! Now, there are over 500 active drone manufacturers. They've created more than 1, 000 different drone models. Four companies control 80% of the FPV drone market. Investments in the drone industry reached over $60 million in 2024.
A state defence tech cluster called Brave1 has been a game-changer. Since March 2023, it has registered over 4, 600 innovations. These come from more than 2, 100 developers. They're working on things like strike systems, UAVs, and advanced reconnaissance solutions. Brave1 has issued over 600 grants, totaling more than $52. 4 million. This makes it the largest "angel investor" for Ukrainian defence innovations.
Investments in Ukraine's defence tech sector have grown rapidly. In 2023, they were at $5 million. By 2024, that number jumped to $50 million. The average investment size also increased, from $500, 000 to $1-3 million. The sector's profit margin is now 25%, the highest in the world. This shows just how attractive Ukrainian defence tech is economically.
Events like IT Arena in Lviv are crucial for showcasing these innovations. This year, it gathered over 6, 000 participants from 30 countries. The Startup Competition at IT Arena is a big deal. It's where cutting-edge innovations, including defence tech, are showcased. Many of these solutions were created during the war. They meet urgent battlefield needs. IT Arena introduced a dedicated defence tech category. This gives startups a platform to present their projects, attract funding, and scale globally.
The Startup Competition is a major draw for investors. This year, its investment fund reached a record-breaking $12. 5 million. In 2024, participants raised over $2 million. One standout example is Hard Cat Drones. They develop unmanned systems for river and maritime operations. Their drones, tested by the Ukrainian Armed Forces, attracted strategic investment.
