A rare and more infectious strain of mpox, initially found in Congo, has now spread within a household in the UK, marking the first cluster outside Africa. Health officials report four cases, including the first patient who traveled from countries with ongoing outbreaks. This variant is believed to cause milder symptoms, making it easier to spread undetected. The U. K. Health Security Agency announced the first case last week, with the patient receiving treatment in a London hospital. This week, three more cases were identified, all from the same household. Susan Hopkins, the chief medical advisor, noted that household transmission isn't surprising due to close contact.
In May, the World Health Organization declared mpox a global emergency after it spread rapidly in Congo and other African countries. The new variant has also affected Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda, with isolated cases reported in Sweden, India, Germany, and Thailand. The UK saw over 3, 000 cases during the 2022 outbreak, which affected more than 100 countries. In Africa, there have been about 43, 000 suspected cases, with over 1, 000 deaths, primarily in Congo. In response, the WHO has allocated nearly 900, 000 vaccine doses to nine African countries battling mpox epidemics.
