In a significant move, authorities in Guernsey have recently seized assets worth $11. 4 million linked to the infamous OneCoin fraud. This scam, one of the largest in cryptocurrency history, has left a trail of financial devastation and unanswered questions. The seized assets, valued at just under £9 million, were held in an account under the name Aquitaine Group Limited at RBS International. The Royal Court in Guernsey upheld an overseas forfeiture order, acting on behalf of German authorities. This decision was made possible by updates to Guernsey’s proceeds of crime laws in 2024. Ruja Ignatova, known as the "Cryptoqueen, " was the face of OneCoin. She promoted it as a groundbreaking cryptocurrency, even though it lacked a functional blockchain. By 2017, as regulators closed in, OneCoin collapsed, and Ignatova vanished. Her disappearance remains a mystery, with theories ranging from sightings in Russia to speculation that she may have been killed years ago.
The OneCoin scam has led to investigations across multiple jurisdictions. Prosecutors have pursued associates and traced funds linked to the scheme's multibillion-dollar haul. Courts in the U. S. and Europe have brought charges against senior figures, including Ignatova’s brother. The FBI has added Ignatova to its Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list, and Europol has placed her on its most-wanted register. Recovering assets from cryptocurrency fraud cases remains a challenge. Ohad Shperling, CEO of IronBlocks, notes that modern on-chain detection capabilities could have helped curb the OneCoin scheme earlier. However, recovering illicit funds is difficult because authorities must either obtain private keys or seize funds at centralized exchanges, both of which are hard to do when suspects are not in custody. Fraudsters are increasingly using privacy-enhancing techniques, making recovery even more challenging. Despite these obstacles, Shperling expresses measured optimism that recoveries could materialize over the next several years. The more immediate opportunity lies in prevention, with advances in on-chain monitoring making it easier to flag potentially fraudulent activity early on.
