Tobacco waste is a big problem, but it could also be a big solution. Scientists have been looking into how to reuse and recycle tobacco waste to make it eco-friendly. They studied 168 different tobacco extracts from four main types of tobacco: flue-cured, dark air-cured, Burley, and Oriental. These extracts were made using different methods like concretes, absolutes, and supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) oils.
After analyzing these extracts, they found over 500 metabolites, which are like the building blocks of tobacco. These were grouped into 24 categories, including alkaloids, indoles, and flavor compounds. They noticed that dark air-cured and Burley tobaccos had similar metabolic compositions, while flue-cured and Oriental tobaccos had more diverse flavors.
Interestingly, extracts made with 70% ethanol had similar amounts of addictive alkaloids. But when they used 95% ethanol for secondary extraction, it removed most of these alkaloids while keeping the flavor compounds. However, combining supercritical fluid extraction with 95% ethanol extraction lost many flavor compounds, probably because the solvents didn't mix well.
This study suggests that using secondary extraction with different ethanol-water ratios could be really useful for making products from tobacco waste.
