Understanding Truth in Today’s News World
Reno, Nevada, USAMon Apr 27 2026
In a lively evening at the Reno Public Market, community members will gather to talk about how easy it is for false stories to spread and why facts are becoming harder to find. The event, organized by the News Literate Community Initiative together with Truckee Meadows Tomorrow, is open to everyone who reads or questions the news.
The discussion will start with a chance for people to meet local media outlets before the panel takes over. Experts from universities, TV stations and publishing houses will explain what “truth decay” looks like in Reno, why it is growing, and how responsible reporting can help. A moderator will guide the conversation and answer questions from the crowd.
Key speakers include a dean from the university’s journalism school, a long‑time state politics reporter and a bilingual journalist who runs community programs. Their goal is to give practical tips on spotting real news from rumors or misleading posts.
Besides learning, attendees can browse booths set up by organizations such as the university’s office of the provost and a local research center. A raffle will take place in the evening, and the night ends with closing remarks that remind everyone how important trust in news is for good decision making.
The organizers hope the event will also raise funds to keep teaching people how to read news wisely, and they are looking for volunteers and more exhibitors to join.
