Unexpected Leader at Truist Championship Before Storms Hit
Truist Field at Quail Hollow Club, Charlotte, USAFri May 08 2026
The Truist Championship in Charlotte, North Carolina, took an unpredictable turn on Thursday when weather forced players to abandon their rounds. Matt McCarty, a golfer with just one PGA Tour victory under his belt, unexpectedly rose to the top with a stunning 8-under-par 63. His final three holes featured birdies, putting him ahead of Sungjae Im, who was hot on his trail after an eagle at the seventh hole.
With 20 golfers still working on their rounds when the tournament was paused, McCarty’s performance stood out. He made an impressive 220 feet of putts in a single round, including long-distance successes like a 52. 5-foot birdie at the 13th hole and a 60-foot birdie at the 16th. That’s a rare feat, especially in a sport where precision usually matters more than distance.
McCarty’s win at the Black Desert Championship last October marked his first PGA Tour title, and his recent promotion from the Korn Ferry Tour shows his rapid rise. Meanwhile, Nick Taylor of Canada, England’s Harry Hall, Denmark’s Nicolai Hojgaard, and Norway’s Kristoffer Reitan all sit at 5-under 66, tied for third place. Defending champion Sepp Straka of Austria is also in the mix at 5 under, with a short putt left to finish his round.
A few top players had solid starts too. Tony Finau, David Lipsky, Corey Conners, Tommy Fleetwood, and Alex Fitzpatrick all shot 4-under 67, keeping their chances alive. Finau, currently the fifth alternate, could secure a PGA Championship spot with a win this week.
Even Rory McIlroy, a four-time winner at Quail Hollow, had a slower start with a 1-under 70. His experience on the course might give him an edge later, but for now, the tournament is on hold.
