Plants use something called Light-Harvesting Complex II (LHCII) to efficiently capture light for photosynthesis. Scientists have been trying to understand how LHCII does this so well. They use quantum chemistry, molecular dynamics, and statistical mechanics to study the pigment molecules in LHCII. In this study, scientists created simulation parameters to accurately describe the energy of chlorophyll (Chl) molecules, both in their normal and excited states, when they're in the plant membrane.
They found that Chl a molecules have more varied environments than Chl b molecules, and the energy levels of Chl a and b are quite close. They also looked at how excited states of Chl molecules behave and how LHCII's optical spectrum matches experimental data. This means their simulations were on point, helping us understand how LHCII works!
