The new M4 Mac mini starts at a reasonable price of $599, but it comes with a storage problem. It only has 256GB, which isn't enough for many users. Apple makes upgrading tough by soldering the storage directly onto the logic board. This means you need special skills to upgrade it.
YouTuber dosdude1 decided to take on this challenge. He wanted to avoid Apple's high upgrade costs. He planned to boost the M4 Mac mini's storage to 2TB. The machine uses two 128GB NAND chips for fast performance. So, dosdude1 needed two 1TB chips.
But he hit a snag. He got a bad batch of chips and had to use two 512GB ones instead. This still doubled the storage to 1TB. If you wanted the same upgrade from Apple, it would cost an extra $400. That's a lot!
Dosdude1 shared his process in a video. It shows how to do this upgrade yourself. It's not easy, but it's possible if you have the right tools and skills.
