Urban Trees for a Greener Kingston

Kingston, Ontario, CanadaTue Mar 03 2026
The city of Kingston is kicking off its yearly tree‑planting initiative this spring, inviting residents to buy affordable trees for their backyards. The program offers a range of 11 species, from maple and spruce to apple and oak varieties, allowing homeowners to choose a tree that fits their space. Each property can purchase up to three trees at the special rate of $20 each, including taxes. The sale operates on a first‑come, first‑served basis, so early buyers have the best selection. Why does the city care? Trees act like natural air purifiers, trapping carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen.
They also cool neighborhoods by providing shade, reduce runoff that can erode soil, and create habitats for wildlife. By adding more trees to the city’s canopy, Kingston aims to improve both environmental quality and residents’ well‑being. Since the program started in 2021, more than 14, 000 trees have been sold to locals. The effort not only beautifies homes but also strengthens the community’s green infrastructure. City officials encourage people to plant and care for their trees, offering guidance on proper maintenance in previous guides.
